There is nothing worse than opening your jewellery box to get your favourite piece of handmade, fine silver jewellery out and finding it is tarnished and dull. People often think that tarnishing means the silver is cheap or not pure silver. This, however, is not actually true. Jewellery made using silver clay is 99.9% pure silver, unlike sterling silver it contains no copper, this doesn't mean it will never tarnish though, it will just become discoloured slower and slightly differently. Over time, fine silver can become dull or look slightly golden.
The good news is that caring for your fine silver jewellery is very simple, with a little bit of maintenance, you can keep it looking beautiful for many years. Firstly, handle it with care, don't bend or twist it, and make sure you remove it before having a shower, washing your hands, going swimming in the sea or a swimming pool. Storing it in an airtight, ziplock bag when you are not wearing it can help to protect it.
Finally, don't be afraid to show your handmade fine silver jewellery a little love! Regular polishing with a soft cloth (like the one pictured), ideally one impregnated with an anti-tarnish silver polish will maintain it and if it is a little bit tarnished, a good polish will remove the discolouration and return it to it's shiny silver finish.
